The responsibility for the management of the national top level domain .lu was delegated to RESTENA Foundation by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) in 1992. The service is operated and known as DNS-LU.

IANA initially coordinated the management of all technical DNS matters. At present time it is the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which assume these functions.
