Day-to-day management

Are there restrictions when choosing my domain name?

Yes. There are a number of restrictions, defined in the .lu registry and set out in .lu's domain name charter.

More about guiding principles set by the .lu registry

  • A domain name can be from 1 to 63 characters long: numbers and letters, some of which can be accented, in addition to hyphens (-).
  • It can only start or end with a letter or number.

As the domain names system does not distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters, we recommend that you use only lower case.

What is the minimum information needed to register a domain name?

In order to register and then manage a domain name, a domain name holder, an administrative contact, an invoicing contact as well as a technical contact must be provided. The same natural person or legal entity may perform some or all of these roles.

How long does a domain name registration last?

A domain name registration is defined as a subscription period ranging from one to two years, according to the selected management type.

  • With classic management, the registration will last only a year.
  • With online management, registration is possible for 1 or 2 years, at your discretion.

Can I 'reserve' a domain name?

You can register domain names without notifying the DNS servers and without publishing them in the .lu zone. These 'reserved' domain names are subject to the same terms and conditions and invoicing as 'active' domain names.

I've registered a domain name, what do I need to do to be able to use it?

To be able to use your domain name for, as an example, a website and/or email addresses, you need to configure and activate your name servers.

  • If you are using classic management, you must provide your own DNS servers.
  • If you are using online management, you can use the DNS servers offered by the Restena Foundation or update your own servers.

You can also host your own website and/or email address. As these services are not offered by the registry, you should contact other providers.

How do I know if my proposed domain name is available?

Search for your domain name (without .lu) in the domain name search on our website. The results will confirm whether the name is available or not. If it is available, you can register it by selecting the management that is best for you: classic management or online management.

If the domain name that I want to register isn't available, is there any way of still obtaining it?

A domain name can only be made available before its expiry date by its current holder. You should therefore contact them or their agents. You can find contact details in addition to a contact form specifically dedicated to the domain name via a WHOIS search in the .lu registry.

Run a WHOIS search on the .lu registry website

How long does it take for the domain name I requested to be registered?

Final registration of the domain name depends on the selected management type:

  • With classic management, requests received before 3pm on a working day (Luxembourg time) will be processed on that same day.
  • With online management, the process is carried out in real time, 24/7, after registration fees have been paid.

In some cases, it is possible that a domain name may not be registered immediately because additional checks prove necessary.

How do I know if my registration is successful?

  • With classic management, you and all the contacts allocated to the domain name will receive an email confirming that the name has been registered and specifying everyone's role.
  • With online management, the registered domain name is listed on the registration platform in the "My domain names" category.

Does migration affect the status of my domain name?

Attention! Migration means changing the online management of your .lu domain name by moving from a 'classic' system (via forms) to my.lu computerised management.

No. Migration to online management only changes how your domain name is managed. The registration and renewal dates of the domain name in question are not affected.

In my online account, I would like to take over all of the domain names of the same holder but they have created different administrative contacts for each one of them. What can I do?

You can choose between two solutions:

  • The holder of the domain names can assign you to manage all of their domain names.
  • The appointed administrative contacts for each domain name can assign you individually.

Do I have to register all of the domain names of the same holder with Restena's registry?

No. You are free to use the registry of your choice for each of your domain names. Each registry will manage holders in a completely autonomous and independent manner.

Why was the migration of my domain names unsuccessful?

Attention! Migration means changing the online management of your .lu domain name by moving from a 'classic' system (via forms) to my.lu computerised management.

There are several possible reasons for an unsuccessful migration to online management request:

  • There are outstanding invoices for the domain names submitted for migration.
  • The domain names registered in the holder's name submitted for migration were not provided in their entirety.
  • One or more domain names submitted for migration are not managed by our registry.
  • The migration request contains a fault, error, or omission relating to the login and email address of the future online manager.

I manage my domain names via an online registration platform but I would like to move to classic management. Is this possible?

No, unfortunately not. Only migration from classic management to online management is possible.

What are the payment due dates for my invoices?

  • With classic management, the invoice is issued 30 days before the name expiry date. Any invoice concerning the renewal of the domain name will be followed up with two reminders, sent on the 30th and the 60th day following the invoice date. In the event of non-payment on the 60th day, the domain name will be deactivated and any associated service (website, email, etc.) will no longer be accessible. On the 90th day, the corresponding domain name will be deleted.
  • With online management, the paid invoice will only be generated when payment for the desired operation has been made. No extension will be granted beyond the name's expiry date. However, automatic notification emails concerning future renewal are regularly sent by the registration platform within 2 months of the name's expiry date and 5 days before the expiry date in the event of no action being taken.

I made a mistake when registering my domain name. What can I do?

Unfortunately a registered domain name cannot be changed. We recommend that you take the following steps:

  • Register the correct domain name in the same way that you did for the wrong name.
  • Delete the unwanted domain name in order to prevent any new mistakes in the future.

Can I use both classic management and online management for the domain names of the same holder.

No. You, or the holder, must choose one of these two management options.

Online account

In my online account, I would like to take over all of the domain names of the same holder but they have created different administrative contacts for each one of them. What can I do?

You can choose between two solutions:

  • The holder of the domain names can assign you to manage all of their domain names.
  • The appointed administrative contacts for each domain name can assign you individually.

I manage my domain names via an online registration platform but I would like to move to classic management. Is this possible?

No, unfortunately not. Only migration from classic management to online management is possible.

I created a my.lu account. Where are my login details?

To activate a my.lu account, the registration platform sends an email with an activation link to the manager's email address that was provided when the account was created. The activation of the account generates a second email containing the password enabling you to access your account. It is therefore problematic if these emails are not received. Consequently it is crucial that:

  • you can access the email address provided while signing up,
  • the email address has been entered correctly.

If this is not the case, we recommend that you create a new account with the correct address.

Your anti-virus software and/or your spam filters may also prevent emails from being received. Check your spam folder and that your software/firewalls are functioning properly. If the issue persists, please contact us.

I can no longer access my online account, can you help me?

There are several possible reasons why you cannot log in to your account:

  • You are not using the correct password, or login, for the account that you are trying to log into.
  • Your login is invalid.
  • Your login has been entered incorrectly (order of characters, etc.).
  • Your password has been spelt wrong, the wrong case has been used, etc.
  • Your browser does not accept cookies.

Other more general explanations may explain your login problem:

  • Your Internet connection has been lost or is very slow.
  • A firewall installed on your computer is blocking connection.

In these cases, we recommend that you contact your Internet Service Provider for help.

Why isn't the password to my my.lu account working?

When you connect to your online registration platform, check the following:

  • Make sure that the Caps Lock key on your keyboard is not on.
  • Enter your password with the correct lower- and upper-case letters that you originally set.
  •  If you manage several my.lu accounts, you will have as many matching logins. Make sure that you are not trying to connect using a password from one of these other accounts.
  • Check that your browser accepts cookies.
  • Make sure that any antivirus software installed on your computer is not blocking connection.

If the issue persists, you might have forgotten your password. You can recover it by clicking on 'Forgotten Password'.

Why are the menu buttons not displayed on my screen on my online account?

Your Internet browser might need updating. Make sure that you are using the latest version of your browser and update it, if necessary.

Why can't I find my domain name nor any contact details in my online account?

One person may manage several accounts on the my.lu registration platform and therefore have several logins. This is probably the issue. Make sure that you log in with the login for the domain that you are trying to access.

Invoicing

Who receives invoices and what details are provided in them?

  • With classic management, invoices are sent to the invoicing contact. It will include the reason for invoicing, the domain names, the price, the amount of applicable VAT, the payment due date (30 days), and banking information for wire transfers
  • With online management, no invoice is sent, but a renewal notice is notified by email to the account manager. The invoice will be available on the registration platform in the 'My domain names' category after the manager has paid all relevant fees. It will include the address of the invoicing contact, the reason for invoicing, the domain names, the price, the amount of applicable VAT, and an acknowledgement that the invoice has been paid.

How do I find out who is the registered invoicing contact?

  • With classic management, contact the registry for a copy of the initial registration or most the recent invoice.
  • With online management, in the registration platform in the 'My domain names' category, the manager of the my.lu account can view the relevant contacts for each individual domain name.

Who pays for operations related to my domain name(s)?

  • With classic management, invoices for an operation are addressed to and are payable by the invoicing contact for the domain name. As the registry does not cross-check the purchaser, the invoice number must be provided in order to avoid any errors.
  • With online management, the my.lu account manager (rather than the invoicing contact) will make payment via their account. Thereafter, the account manager can also upload the paid invoice via their account.

What credit cards can I use to pay for my domain name(s)?

Regardless of which management system is selected, you can pay with Visa, Mastercard, or American Express directly on the my.lu website.

  • For classic management, follow the link on your invoice.
  • For online management, go to your my.lu account.

How do I find out if there are any outstanding invoices for my domain names?

If you are unsure whether you have any outstanding invoices for one of your domain names:

  • with classic management, check whether your invoicing contacts have received any reminders for unpaid invoices;
  • with online management, go to the 'My domain names' category in your my.lu account and check your domain names listed as 'WHAT?' indicating that an invoice is outstanding.

I didn't pay my invoice on time. What are the consequences?

  • With classic management, non-payment for a chargeable operation within the due date will result in deactivation followed by the deletion of the domain name in question.
  • With online management, all chargeable operations are due by credit card.

However, if your domain name was deleted within the past 30 days, you have the option of recovering it;

  • With classic management, a new registration request must be submitted to the registry.
  • With online management, a restoration request must be made. A restoration fee will be added to the registration fees due for the start of a new one-year registration period.

What can I do if the invoicing contact or manager does not pay?

This may occur, particularly if contact information are not accurate or if the individual responsible for payment is unavailable. You can take some simple steps to avoid your domain name from being deleted.

  • With classic management, you should submit a contact information update request if it is inaccurate, or replace the invoicing contact.
  • With online management, check, and if necessary, replace the account manager with any person who is able to pay via credit card.

How do I pay my invoices?

That depends on what management system you use.

  • With classic management, the invoicing contact responsible for the domain name may pay by credit card or wire transfer.
  • With online management, the account manager may pay with a credit card.

I've changed the name servers of my domain name but it isn't working. Why not?

Any changes you make to your DNS servers do not take effect immediately. They are subject to unavoidable delays

  • The timeline with the .lu registry: updated 24/7 on the hour.
  • The timeline for online availability: activated within 1 hour, after changes have been made by the .lu registry.
  • The timeline for changes (with existing name servers): depending on the TTL (Time to Live) related to your domain name, i.e. the time during which information in your domain name in the .lu zone is stored in memory. The TTL varies from one DNS provider to another.
  • At least one of the server names is not configured or is not correctly configured for your domain name.

Why are emails and/or websites related to my domain name not working?

There are several possible reasons. The main ones are as follows:

  • Your domain name has expired.
  • Your name servers are incorrect or not working.
  • Your domain name was not activated because incorrect technical information was provided at registration.

Web hosting also plays a crucial role in the running of your email and sites. We recommend that you check with your host that they are working properly.
