What is a domain name?
All computers connected to the internet communicate using the IP communication protocol and the IP addresses assigned to them (e.g. 158.64.1.25). The main disadvantage of IP addresses is their digital form, which makes them very difficult to remember. To make the addresses of computers connected to the internet easier to remember, the domain name system (DNS) was introduced. This system associates every IP address (158.64.1.25) with a sequence of characters (www.dns.lu) that are easier to remember. The RESTENA Foundation is not responsible for assigning IP addresses, which will be assigned by your service provider. In this example, www.dns.lu is the internet name of the web server and dns.lu is the domain name.
