What are domain names starting with 'xn--'
The IDN domain names show up in two variants, one with special characters and the ASCII variant with its 'xn--' prefix.
To convert from one variant to the other you may use the Domain-Name Availability tool. Enter either variant and it will show you both variants (assuming that only characters accepted by the naming charter are used).
The Whois Gateway does not validate domains against the naming charter and accepts both variants as does the domain-name availability tool.
